The Champion in Me
A 12-week pastoral intervention for Key Stage 4
Designed specifically for Key Stage 4 young people at a pivotal point in their education, The Champion in Me combines structured group work with individual one-to-one time to build the confidence, resilience, and self-awareness that young people need to finish school strong.
Young people work in a small group with an experienced mentor, guided through a phased programme of personal challenge, aspiration-building, and goal-setting. The mentor models championing behaviours and supports each young person through guided conversation, journaling, and peer reflection — fostering mutual accountability within the group. Individual one-to-one sessions run alongside the group programme, giving each young person dedicated space to work through personal barriers and set meaningful goals. Where appropriate, parent and family engagement is woven in — because lasting change happens when the whole village is invested.
Aims
Provide a safe space for Key Stage 4 young people to express themselves, reflect, and set personal development goals.
Empower young people to identify and overcome barriers to progress at a critical stage of their education.
Encourage ambitious, realistic goal-setting toward outcomes that matter — including attendance, attainment, and next steps beyond school.
By the end, participants will:
Produce a personal development action plan.
Identify individual strengths and areas for growth.
Develop positive peer support and self-reflection skills.
Have had dedicated one-to-one time with an experienced pastoral practitioner.
Who is this for?
Key Stage 4 students aged 14–16 who are finding the school environment challenging, at risk of exclusion, or who would benefit from structured off-timetable support at a critical point in their education. Particularly effective for young people with attendance concerns, those on SEND support plans, or those whose attitude and engagement is affecting their outcomes at GCSE.
Delivered in groups of up to 7, with individual 1-2-1 sessions built into the programme for every young person. Parent and family engagement included where appropriate.
Investment
Group programme (up to 7 young people) — £9,600 per term Includes weekly group sessions, individual 1-2-1 time with each young person, parent engagement where appropriate, written outcome summary per pupil, and a school debrief at programme close.
Additional 1-2-1 support beyond the programme — £800 per day, agreed with the school in advance.
